Several French words have been placed alongside the statue of Solon, one of the founders of Athenian democracy: mesure, démesure, and des mesures. Together, they form a play on language that contrasts moderation, excess, and the measures adopted in response. Rendered in neon, they echo Albert Camus’s reflection in The Rebel:
